Q: How long does it take to lose Lexapro weight?
I have taken Lexapro for 1.5 years and gained 30lbs. If I keep going to the gym 5 days a week and really watch what I eat how long will it take to lose the weight? Has anyone stopped taking Lexapro or another SSRI?

No smart @$$ answers please.

A: try the Lil Jack workout http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKCGe2Ezris

Q: What are the effects of getting off of low doses of Lexapro after four months?
Is it okay to just increase your seratonin in a more natural way?

I heard that no one stays on Lexapro a lifetime because the seratonin eventually runs out.

What natural remedies work better than that? What worked for you?
I’m asking YOU what more natural remedies. I’ve heard taking tryptophan will help.

A: I’m take a very low dose of lexapro. I’m taking lexapro for anxiety. Even though I’m on a very low dose, When I’ve tried to get off of it I’ve become more nervous. I have been on lexapro for 6-8 months. Where you have only been on it for 4 months. Talk to your medication provider.

Q: What happens if i stop taking lexapro will i have withrawal symptoms?
i have been taking lexapro for 3 months. if i stop taking it will i be in danger?

A: You need to talk to your doctor about this. Some SSRIs must be tapered off – you can’t just stop.
Why do you want to stop? Unless it’s because you don’t like Lexapro (I didn’t), it’s probably best to continue with your medication – 3 months isn’t a very long time.
If you just don’t like Lexapro, your doctor may advise you to change to another SSRI. I went from Lexapro to Prozac without any time in between, just changed over, and I had no problems.
The Prozac worked for me, and, with talk therapy, allowed me the space to get my life together. For the last 3 years, I’ve been off medication and I’ve been happier than I’ve ever been.

Q: How long does it take for lexapro to work for panic attacks?
I have been having panic attacks and I was prescribed lexapro. I have not taken it yet but before taking it I just want to know how long does it take for the drug to actually work for panic attacks?

A: Four to six weeks.

Q: Can a potassium sparing diuretic lessen the effect of Lexapro?
My husband had a heart attack and it seems as if his Lexapro isn’t working as well as previously. He is taking many meds. I wonder if his diuretic is flushing the Lexapro through his body too quickly.

A: You need to read “The High Blood Pressure Hoax,” by Sherry Rodgers, MD. I just finished it and it is one of the best books I have ever read. No BS, and there are about 3 pages of citations to medical journals at the end of each chapter. She says all diseases start via a deterioration of the blood vessels. This condition is much more common now because we are full of heavy metals, drugs, and artificial food ingredients.

She tells you what happens when you lack particular chemicals/minerals, and how to test for them. For example, one of the things that causes high blood pressure is a lack of magnesium. Yet, more than half the doctors of never checked the magnesium levels of their patients until AFTER they died.

She also gives you a list of vitamins & minerals to take, because all pharma drugs decrease the amount of these in your cells, which leads to more problems.

You need this book, it is awesome!

Good luck to you and your husband.

Q: How do you know if your Lexapro dose need to be increased?
Anyone on Lexapro? How does it make you feel and how do I know if I need to up my dose from 10mg to 20 mg?? It is working as far as: I do not get aggravated as easily but I just seem depressed sometimes. I had a hysterectomy this past April at the age of 29 so its just makes me sad sometimes. Any advice?

A: I just got prescribed to 10 mg today, I hope it works for me.
I have bad depression and anxiety.

Q: How long do withdrawal symptoms from Lexapro last?
I was on10mg per day of Lexapro for about 10 months. I’ve slowly tapered off over the last month and now for a week Ive had none. My withdrawal symptoms ( Brain shock, nightmares, vertigo, nausia ) dont seem to be letting up. How long will this last?

A: Oh boy. Have just stopped taking this drug a week ago, thursday specifically. Still feeling some weird stuff, dizzyness, blood circulation, insomnia (every other day). Thank god though my cognition returned once stopping it. Good luck

Q: What causes weight gain while on Lexapro ?
I am diabetic and I take water pills because of having congestive heart failure. Now in two months on Lexapro I’ve regained 10 lbs that I lost over the summer. Why ?
And please don’t just say increased appetite.

A: Hi Ray. I’m not diabetic, but I have been taking Lexapro for the last 2 years. Since on Lexapro I have gained 50 pounds. I know that my weight gain is probably not entirely Lexapro’s fault because being depressed made me less active than I used to be. However, Lexapro is an SSRI–Specific Serotonin Reuptake Inihibitor, which means it is keeping the serotonin active longer in your brain. Serotonin not only affects your mood, but also affects your appetite which can make you feel more hungry. It can also make you crave carbohydrates and fatty foods. I’m not a doctor but it sounds like your weight gain could be a combination of depression, Lexapro, and decreased activity. I would strongly recommend talking to your doctor about this. I would also try to snack on foods lower in calories like cucumbers. I hope this is helpful.

Q: How long do the sexual side effects of lexapro last?
I’ve been on lexapro for a week and a half and i was wondering how long the sexual side effects would take to go away. Thank You.

A: I have tried several SSRI’s for depression and anxiety and typically at the 2 week mark the sexual side effect starts…for most people it is the inability to orgasm and typically it peaks at the 2-4 week period and sometimes if you are one who gets that side effect, it does not go away.
I am also a healthcare provider and you should not be afraid to talk to your doctor about other meds, some in the same class may work better for you (Zoloft, Paxil) or another class altogether like the older Tricyclics (Pamelor) Or if the issue is anxiety without depression, but some studies have shown it does help both, Klonopin.
You then run the side effects of those drugs which can be bothersome too…weight gain, dry mouth, dizziness, etc…
In any case, weigh the pro’s and con’s…
Good Luck to you

Q: Do you have good and bad days starting lexapro?
I have been on lexapro 10mg for 3 weeks now, and for the most part, i have been having pretty good days. But every now and then, i’ll have a day where i feel out of it and more anxious than normal. Is this just my body getting used to the medication? Is it normal to have good days and bad days?

A: yeah i do.like above though,it’s nomal.also it takes antidepressants up to 6–8 weeks til it gets it full effect.give it a chance.i love it.and my moms side of the family almost them all are on it.and damn it’s been help in so many ways for us all.good luck.

Q: What effects would taking street drugs while on Lexapro do?
I have been on Lexapro for a while now, 10g. What would smoking weed, ecstasy, shrooms, and alcohol do to me?

Ive seen people try to kill themselves while on certain drugs while on other anti depressants so I am just wondering what it’ll do to me.

Please help!

A: I hated Lexapro. I took it for a while. It made me feel “Wrong” is the best way I can put it. Leave it to the street drugs to cure your depression. If they don’t, cut them out all together…..except weed. I believe its the best stress reliever around.

Q: What does drinking a lot while on Lexapro do?
I take 10 mg of Lexapro and my family doctor said I can have 1 or 2 glasses of wine but no more than that. It seems to make me tired no big deal.
If I break that rule what will happen? What happens to a person who drinks like 4 glasses of wine when on Lexapro?

A: Alcohol is a depressant, which counter-acts the purpose of the Lexapro, the anti-depressant.

If… You want to drink say four glasses of wine, and haven’t had any alcohol that week, I’d say you’re probably okay – as long as you don’t drink after that for a while.

Physically, it won’t do anything bad to you. It probably doesn’t do the liver much good though.

Just be careful, and don’t overdo it.

Q: What happens i take lexapro and im not really depressed?
I have all the symptoms of depression and i have left over lexapro from my brother….my mom will not take me to the doctor so i cannot get perscribed…ive checked many sites and i have alot of the symptoms..if i take this and i dont have depression will i get any bad symptoms or side affects?

A: it can be bad. you && your brother have different medical backgrounds. talk to a guidance counselor instead, they can help!

ps its illegal…

Q: What are your opinions on staying on Lexapro during pregnancy?
I’m 32. I’ve taken Lexapro for 2-3 years during which my mental and physical health have improved tenfold. I went off it once with the intention of becoming pregnant. I became so sick (depressed, anxious, non-functioning) that I went back on it. We’re once again considering trying to get pregnant and understand little research exists on Lexapro’s effect on pregnancy. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

A: I would always recommend women avoid antidepressants during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. The risks are just not known and some research has suggested SSRI’s like Lexapro cause lung and heart defects in humans. In fact the FDA just issued a warning that controlled studies linked Lexapro with Pulmonary Hypertension in the newborn. The study was published by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Now if your depression is so bad that you cannot function and you feel suicidal then I would continue the Lexapro. Depression often gets worse during pregnancy so you will likely need treatment. Perhaps ask your doctor about reducing the dosage? Wellbutrin is another antidepressant with a safer rating than Lexapro. Wellbutrin has more research and seems to be safer than Lexapro at this point. Perhaps you could try switching medications before conceiving and see if it helps you.

Just remember that uncontrolled depression would be riskier than the Lexapro, but you will put your child at a risk for defects. Some women do fine on lexapro and a small few have children with defects. Don’t ever let a doctor tell you it’s absolutely safe because many of them don’t warn patients of the risks.

Helpful links regarding SSRI’s & defects.
